MOHAI Welcomes Everyone

MOHAI strives to be inclusive of all audiences. With multiple free and low cost ways to access the museum through exhibits and programming, the museum reaches many communities from the region and beyond. Many enriching stories are shared throughout the museum, and visitors can explore and identify with this collective history to increase their sense of belonging.

Heritage Circle

Heritage Circle, comprised of MOHAI’s leading supporters, provides crucial contributions to all aspects of MOHAI’s exhibits, public, and education programs. Through an annual gift of $1,000 or more, Heritage Circle contributors are given increased access to MOHAI and can connect with history in stimulating and original ways.

Leonard Garfield Legacy Endowment

Leonard Garfield, MOHAI’s beloved Executive Director, celebrates twenty years of visionary leadership in April 2019.

To honor Leonard’s contributions to MOHAI and our community, the MOHAI Board of Trustees has established the Leonard Garfield Legacy Endowment. This will support educational and outreach programs, areas of MOHAI’s mission that are especially meaningful to Leonard.

Annual Fund

Gifts to the Annual Fund provides vital support for every aspect of MOHAI’s mission to preserve history and share stories with the community.

Gifts of all amounts help:

  • Bring exceptional new and exciting exhibits to hundreds of thousands of individuals every year;
  • Provide diverse educational programs and learning experiences to young people and their teachers;
  • Care for the millions artifacts that need to be restored and preserved;

Gifts of Stock

Donating appreciated securities, including stocks or bonds, is one of the most tax advantaged ways to make charitable gifts.

With careful planning, gifts of stock can reduce capital gains taxes, are eligible for a charitable income tax deductions, and further the mission of MOHAI.

Matching Gifts

Double the impact of a gift to MOHAI. Stretch contributions to MOHAI with qualifying matching gifts from employers.

Many employers match contributions dollar for dollar, or even more. Some companies will even match membership support, depending on program requirements.

Find out if a company participates in matching gift programs by contacting its Human Resources, Personnel or Community Relations Department and follow their instructions.

Legacy Giving

MOHAI’s work has never been more important – serving as a vital hub of learning and civic engagement where all members of our community come together to share their voices and stories.

Your support of MOHAI is an investment in our history, but more importantly, and investment in our future; helping us fulfill our promise that everyone, especially our community’s youngest members, are connected to our region and inspired to help us create the world we want to see tomorrow.

We appreciate your heartfelt decision to support our mission and offer the below legacy giving options. Your gift may qualify for federal income tax benefits or deductions.

IRA Distribution: When you make a qualified charitable distribution to MOHAI from your IRA, you can donate up to $100,000 to support our mission. The direct distribution to charity would not be included in taxable income. To qualify, a distribution must go directly to a public charity and meet these certain requirements:

  • If you are 59 ½ or older, you can take a distribution from your IRA and make a gift to MOHAI without penalty. If you itemize your deductions, you may take a charitable deduction for that amount.
  • If you are 70 ½ or older, you can give any amount up to $100,000 per year from your IRA directly to MOHAI. You will not pay income taxes on the transfer. If you are 72 or older, you can use this transfer to satisfy your required minimum distribution.
  • You must decline goods or services.

To take advantage of this opportunity, contact your IRA plan administrator and ask them to directly transfer your contribution to MOHAI before midnight on December 31, 2022. If you have check–writing features on your IRA, please be aware that your check must clear your account by December 31, 2022, to count toward your required minimum distribution for the calendar year.

Appreciated Stock: You may enjoy two tax benefits when you itemize a gift of appreciated stock: avoid paying taxes on the appreciated value and qualify for an income tax charitable deduction based on today’s market value. If you wish to make a gift of appreciated stock, email supportmohai@mohai.org.

Memorial and Tribute Gifts

Make a gift to MOHAI in memory or honor of a friend or loved one, and share their legacy with the MOHAI community.

To make a memorial or tribute gift, include the person’s name when donating. The museum will then notify the party of family members that a gift has been made in his or her name.

All memorial or honorary gifts are directed to the Annual Fund unless otherwise instructed.

Volunteer

Volunteers have an enormous impact at MOHAI as they not only help to preserve Puget Sound history, but also share knowledge and enrich visitors’ experiences. The museum has many volunteer opportunities that are fun and interesting for everyone.
