All events take place at the museum in Lake Union Park
Seattle, WA – Get out of the cold and damp weather this winter and visit Seattle’s Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI). Enjoy dynamic public programs, exhibitions and special events that explore many aspects of Seattle’s past and present, from history and culture to technology and innovation.
Explore the museum’s ongoing programs including the popular History Café, Maker Days, Behind the Seams, and our annual Fire Day on Sunday, October 1. Experience a rare peek into legendary Seattle photographer Al Smith’s historically significant collection that chronicles Seattle’s African-American community during the mid-20th century in the special exhibition Seattle on the Spot: The Photography of Al Smith on view at the museum November 18, 2017 through June 17, 2018.

Free for MOHAI members / Free Grand Atrium admission during event hours
Young firefighters-in-training will love everything about this family-friendly event, co-presented with the Seattle Fire Department. Try on gear, learn fire safety tips and tricks, and even climb aboard a real working fire engine or fire boat! Kids can also explore hands-on artifacts and historic fire equipment, meet local fire fighters, enjoy craft activities, and much more.

On the first Thursday of each month, general admission to MOHAI’s permanent exhibits is free all day. Free admission includes: True Northwest: the Seattle Journey, and the Bezos Center for Innovation. Be sure to check out free events happening throughout Lake Union Park.

The Future of Urban Manufacturing: Seattle’s Vibrant Food and Beverage Producers

Providing accessible delicious food is a cornerstone of a thriving urban landscape. Hear from local food manufacturers about their process of finding raw materials, manufacturing, and marketing food locally. Enjoy food and drink samples from members of Seattle Made. This program is presented in partnership with Seattle Made as part of Seattle Made Week.

Living Voices: Klondike: The Last Adventure

The promise of riches and a new life during a time of turmoil drives one young woman to join a worldwide stampede in the last grand adventure of the 19th century. Living Voices combines live theatrical performances with archival film, turning history into a moving personal journey.

Woodland: The Story of the Animals and People of Woodland Park Zoo

Follow the history of Woodland Park Zoo from its nineteenth-century beginnings as a park carved from the wilderness north of downtown Seattle to its recent role as an international pioneer in zoo design. John Bierlein, author of Historylink’s new book Woodland: The Story of the Animals and People of Woodland Park Zoo, will explore changing ideas about the relationship between humans and animals. History Cafe is co-presented with MOHAI, The Seattle Public Library, and HistoryLink.org.

After WWII, the American ready-to-wear industry boomed, churning out everything from the couture-like artistry of Norman Norrell, to the affordable simplicity of Claire McCardell, to the casual practicality of local companies like Foster-Hochberg. These intimate one-hour sessions, led by MOHAI’s Costume and Textile Specialist allow viewers to discover garments in detail and hear the stories that make them special. Details at MOHAI.org

Explore the Day of the Dead “Invitando al Inframundo” as celebrated in Michoacán, the land of water, with a day full of activities. This event is generously sponsored by the Consulate of Mexico in Seattle.

Seattle on the Spot: The Photographs of Al Smith Opening Day

Celebrate the opening of Seattle on the Spot with a photographic journey through Seattle’s vibrant past. Tour the exhibit and see artifacts from legendary photographer Al Smith’s darkroom. Go behind the scenes in an immersive nightclub that includes a video, dance floor, music, interactives, games and artifacts on display, and more.

The Saturday after Thanksgiving, ditch the shopping crowds and come to Lake Union Park to celebrate the holiday season. MOHAI, The Center for Wooden Boats, and the Historic Ships Wharf will be filled with festive music and family-friendly crafts and activities all day. Bring new socks to donate to a local homeless shelter and receive $2 off regular price MOHAI admission.
As a special holiday treat, visit MOHAI’s popular miniature Hammons House. From 1-3 pm, join the museum’s Collection Manager Betsy Bruemmer and special guest Robert Sondheim who served as caretaker of the Hammons House for many years.

Back by popular demand, MOHAI’s famous Hammons House will be on display for the first time since the museum’s move to Lake Union Park. This finely crafted miniature house was designed by renowned Seattle architect Joseph Coté and built in 1955 by Fritz Hahn and Ernest Gebert.

Telling the Story of Al Smith: An Evening with the Curators

How do you tell the story of Seattle’s Central District, vibrant jazz scene, and much more through the lens of one man’s camera? Join Vivian Phillips, Seattle Arts Commission chair, as she hosts a conversation with curators Howard Giske, Al “Butch” Smith, Jr., Paul de Barros, and Quin’Nita Cobbins. Gain insights into the life and legacy of Al Smith and the development of MOHAI’s new exhibit, Seattle on the Spot: The Photographs of Al Smith.

Location, Hours and Admission
MOHAI is located at 860 Terry Ave. in Seattle. Exhibit gallery hours are 10 a.m. to
5 p.m. daily. Admission is free on first Thursdays to MOHAI’s regular galleries and open until 8 p.m. (Seattle on the Spot: The Photographs of Al Smith and MOHAI’s popular miniature Hammons House, will be accessible at a special rate on first Thursdays of $8 for adults, $6 for student/senior/military). Admission to Seattle on the Spot: The Photographs of Al Smith is included with regular MOHAI admission of $19.95 for adults, $15.95 for seniors (62 and above); $13.95 for students and military (with ID); free for children 14 and under (when accompanied by an adult) and MOHAI members. As part of the Museums For All program, low-income families can visit MOHAI for a minimal fee of $2 per person with the presentation of an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card.
