Position Title: Café Staff

Reports to: Café Manager and Café Assistant Manager

Location: MOHAI, at Lake Union Park’s historic Armory building

Classification: Non-exempt, Part-time, Hourly

Schedule: 15–29 hours per week, flexibility required, including evenings, weekends and holidays

Pay rate: $16.00 per hour

Position Description:

Café Staff are responsible for serving all products with friendly, individualized attention towards each MOHAI visitor and guest in a professional manner. This position reports to the Café Manager and Café Assistant Manager and is a member of the Finance and Operations Department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to outstanding customer service by maintaining friendly and courteous interactions with visitors and staff.
  • Ensure that all interactions are culturally responsive, respectful, and based on a foundation of MOHAI’s commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility.
  • Performs sales transactions in a timely fashion, enter all sales into the register to ensure purchases are accurately recorded, make change, accept other acceptable forms of payment.
  • Prepare in house and to-go food and beverages, including coffee and espresso drinks.
  • General server duties, including but not limited to: taking orders, delivering food to tables and beverage, bussing tables.
  • Inventory/restocking of perishables and beverages.
  • Ensure the physical appearance of the Café is clean and meets MOHAI expectations – clean prep areas, visitor tables, floor, removal of trash, compost and recycling, etc.
  • Responds proactively to prevent customer service situations and reports all customer complaints to the Café Manager and/or Café Assistant Manager.
  • Reports potential safety hazards to the manager on duty.
  • Replenish condiments, coffee, other beverages and general supplies while maintaining cleanliness of service areas.
  • Keeps perishable and beverages case attractively stocked.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least one year of experience in customer service, retail, concierge, hospitality, or equivalent field.
  • Must be age 18 or older.
  • Excellent customer service, organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Food-handling knowledge with current certification or willing to obtain.
  • Prior barista or coffee experience encouraged but not required.
  • Holds current WA MAST permit or willing to obtain.
  • Ability to multi-task and maintain an upbeat attitude in a fast-paced environment.
  • Reliable and prompt.
  • Self-motivator with good judgment as well as team oriented and collaborative.
  • Able to reach and bend and frequently lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Able to work in a standing position for long periods of time.
  • Enthusiasm for and knowledge about MOHAI’s exhibits, programs, and mission.

MOHAI operates a dramatic and award-winning museum in Lake Union Park in Seattle’s vibrant South Lake Union neighborhood, and a Resource Center in Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood. MOHAI also hosts the Bezos Center for Innovation, focusing on the history and future of innovation in the Puget Sound region.
