Position Title: Collections Preparator

Reports to: Collections Specialist

Location: MOHAI, Resource Center at Georgetown & Lake Union Park’s historic Armory building

Classification: Non-Exempt, Hourly, Part-time, On-Call

Schedule: Variable, includes weekdays, possible evenings and weekends

Pay rate: $17.00 per hour

Position Description:

The Collections Preparator will assist the Collections team and perform duties related to exhibit preparation, mounting of costumes, and handling historic objects. This position reports to the Collections Specialist and is a member of the Curatorial Resources Department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely Collections Team to execute exhibit preparation.
  • Mount costumes for exhibit and photography; including but not limited to padding out and shaping mannequin forms, constructing and modifying supports and props.
  • Properly handle historic and delicate costume objects, and dressing and undressing objects on custom forms.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • One (1) year of preparator experience in a gallery, museum setting, arts and/or historical society organization or work in a related field.
  • Experience with handling historic costumes and preparing mounts in a museum setting.
  • Self-motivator with good judgment and ability to work successfully both independently and collaboratively, able to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written and communication skills.
  • Ability to work standing for an extended period; some strength and stamina necessary as it involves handling fragile artwork, artifacts and objects of varying dimensions, weight and volume.
  • Enthusiasm for and knowledge about MOHAI’s exhibits, programs, and mission.
